Chicken Will Be Expensive This Festive Season – Ghana Poultry Project

Poultry in Ghana

The Ghana Poultry Project says the price of local chicken has skyrocketed this festive season for various reasons.

Chicken is the main delicacy for Ghanaians but authorities of the Poultry Project say current developments in the poultry industry have left them no option but to increase prices.

Communications and Marketing Specialist for the Project – Asiwome Biekro – revealed on Joy News that there a current shortage of maize and sorghum has left poultry farmers to spend more in buying the limited available feed for their chicken.

According to him, a live broiler which hitherto was going for 45 cedis is now going for 55 to 60 cedis. A live layer which hitherto was selling at 50 cedis is now around 65 to 70 cedis, depending on your location of purchase.

The shortage of maize has been attributed to some major factors. The Ghana Agribusiness Chamber reveals that the situation is emanating from the commercial purchase of the grains by traders in Burkina Faso and Nigeria who are quoting huge prices for the basic commodity.

Also, there has not been enough rainfall in the rural North. This, according to the Chamber, has delayed the cultivation and harvest of the basic crop.

Food commodity research body, ESOKO, has attributed these developments to an artificial shortage across the market centers as maize sellers try to hoard the limited available commodity to make profits of patrons who are in dire need of the product.

‘I Foresee A Doom Before Him’- Popular NDC Man Warns Sammy Gyamfi

Published

on

Recent comments made by the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Samuel ‘Sammy’ Gyamfi, according to economist and columnist Isaac ‘Coach Opeele’ Boateng, are likely to exacerbate the party’s already precarious situation.

According to him, the party’s inability to properly present its case, causing disappointment among its members and well-wishers, is a storm that is still passing, “and the party is already in trouble” because of Sammy Gyamfi’s outburst.

He pointed out that the present situation in the NDC is a repeat of what occurred in the NPP in 2012. “A storm is brewing in the NDC, with Sammy Gyamfi accusing the party’s leadership in parliament of being disloyal and calling for their expulsion. This is the same thing that happened in the NPP, resulting in internal problems.”

Coach Opeele believes the NDC will face more internal strife in the future, particularly because they currently lack a unifying leader. “The NDC is behaving in the same way as the NPP did in opposition a few years ago. I assume the party no longer has a leader who can summon the party’s members to order.”

This was mentioned by the Social Analyst as part of his contribution to a panel discussion on Happy 98.9 FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political talk show.

The NDC’s election petition, which claimed that no party received the legal 50 percent plus one needed to win the Presidency, was dismissed by a seven-member Supreme Court bench. The court has ruled that the case is without substance.

In other news, the NDC’s National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has accused the party’s leadership in Parliament, as well as the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, of betraying the party, which is assumed to be exacerbating the party’s woes.

Sammy Gyamfi said Haruna Iddrisu, MP for Tamale South, and Muntaka Mubarak, MP for Asawase, “brazenly defied the party leadership and betrayed the public good for their selfish interest.”

“We must not allow them to succeed in their narrow-minded attempt to delegitimize the NDC, the party that has done so much for them and all of us. In a Facebook post, he said, “The embarrassment they have brought on the group will forever hang like an albatross around their necks.”

His claim comes after NDC MPs on Parliament’s Appointments Committee approved Dominic Nitiwul, the Defence Minister-designate, and later approved three others rejected Minister-designates when they were brought before the House.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto, the Food and Agriculture Minister-designate, received 53.96 percent of the vote with 143 votes out of 265 ballots cast, with one spoilt ballot.

Mavis Hawa Koomson received 60.75 percent of the vote with 161 votes, and Oppong Nkrumah received 58.65 percent of the vote with 155 votes.

With 137 NPP MPs, 137 NDC MPs, and one independent candidate remaining in Ghana’s Parliament, it appears that some NDC MPs voted to support the Minister-designates.
