The 7th Parliament’s Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, brought about events that resulted in Nadowli Kaleo’s former MP, Alban Bagbin, becoming the 8th Parliament’s Speaker.

Reports are rife that his contender, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, was defeated by the nominee of the National Democratic Congress caucus with 138 votes, resulting in him being sworn in as Parliament’s Speaker from 2021-2025.

However, detailing the specifics of the night of the dissolution of the 7th Parliament in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, the MP for Suame suggested that, contrary to the rumors, both candidates received 136 votes during the voting exercise to decide who was to be the leader of the House of Legislature.

He also clarified that two of the votes were not counted, while one was rejected because the two candidates were tainted.

He noted that he recommended to the leadership that a re-run of the polls be carried out after the brouhaha concerning the ballot sheets involving Tema West Member of Parliament, Carlos Ahenkorah, as it appeared two of the ballots could not be accounted for after they had been recovered.

However, as the House had spent over 8 hours and was short of time before the inauguration of the President-elect later in the day, the idea was shot down by the leadership on the other side of the divide.

He suggested that the police were called into the chamber to safeguard the ballots after three unsuccessful attempts to determine whether there should be a rerun.

After several consultations and taking into account the actions that marred the exercise, the leadership agreed to settle on the NDC candidate, Alban Sumana Bagbin, for the office of the Speaker of Parliament.
