University of Nigeria Lecturer Arrested For Impregnating, Threatening Student

Operatives of Crack Squad, Enugu State Police Command have arrested one Dr. Chigozie Odum, said to be a senior lecturer at the Archeology Department of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), IgbereTV reports.

The lecturer was arrested for allegedly impregnating a student identified as Onah Chinyere and threatening her.

A petition from the family lawyer of the female student led to the arrest of the lecturer. It read;

“It is our client’s instruction that she has been a student in the Archeology and Tourism Department, Faculty of Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

“According to her instructions, Dr. Odum Chigozie Jude is one of the lecturers in the said department.

“Our brief further showed that the said Dr. Odum Jude went and approached our client and demanded to be sleeping with her and threatened our client that if she refuses, she will never graduate from the said department.

“He further threatened her that he was a cultist while in school and that up till today he still has a good number of them under his payroll. He, therefore, warned our client to comply with his demands and requests in her own interest.

“Our information further showed that he called our client to his house and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her.”

Out of 600 students of Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State, about 50 were left behind, a teacher who pleaded for anonymity told Daily Trust.

Gunmen had stormed the school in the early hours of Friday, abducting many students.

The teacher said parents of the students, who escaped the abduction, came as early as 5: am to take away their daughters, adding that some mothers of kidnapped girls were slumping on the school premises.

“Initially, the school authorities prevented them from going with the remaining students but they grew angrier and began to pull down doors and windows of the buildings in the school and the school authority had to yield to their demands.

“When the gunmen laid siege, they attacked the soldiers stationed in the community before they gained entry into the school.“Some people told us that they stationed vehicles at the outskirts of the school.

“Security operatives and the local vigilante groups are trailing the gunmen and dozens of other residents have volunteered to take part in the search,” he said.‘No idea of number’However, the Zamfara State Government has said the number of students abducted from the school is unknown.Speaking with Daily Trust, the state’s commissioner of information, Alhaji Sulaiman Tunau Anka, said the exact number of abducted students is yet to be ascertained.“We are yet to verify the exact number of students kidnapped.“Security operatives have launched a manhunt for the criminals.”“They went to the school with vehicles.

Some of the girls were made to trek. We are on top of the situations as all contacts and efforts are being made to rescue the kidnapped schoolgirls,” he said.

The abduction happened hours after the state government said some repentant bandits had surrendered their arms.

Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara has been pushing for a dialogue with bandits for peace to reign.

Armed bandits have attacked a girls secondary school in Zamfara State, kidnapping many female students, the CNN is reporting.

The attack reportedly occurred at the Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State Friday morning.A teacher in the school confirmed the attack to BBC Hausa with the kidnapped students said to be close to 300.

PREMIUM TIMES will provide more details of the incident in subsequent reports. The state government and the police were yet to speak on the incident at the time of this report.

Zamfara in Northwest Nigeria is one of the states most affected by bandits’ attacks. The attacks have continued despite negotiations initiated by the state government with the bandits.

The latest attack on the Zamara school occurs about two weeks after over 20 students were abducted by armed bandits from a school in Niger State. The students in Niger were yet to be released.
