Taliban Soldiers Take Control Of Afghanistan’s Presidential Palace As U.S. Evacuates Troops

Taliban soldiers on Sunday took control of the presidential palace
in Kabul, Afghanistan, solidifying their grip over the country as the U.S.
government rushes to evacuate remaining personnel in its total withdrawal
from the region.

Photos published by the Qatari media outlet Al-Jazeera showed Taliban
soldiers sitting and standing around a desk in the presidential palace
hours after President Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

Taliban officials told Reuters their plan is to have a swift transition to
power without an interim government as a buffer, with Taliban
spokesperson Suhail Shaheen telling Al-Jazeera earlier in the day they are
seeking an “unconditional surrender.”

The development comes as the U.S. is still working to evacuate the last
remaining U.S. citizens in the country, as well as some Afghans who
assisted the U.S. military—though the U.S. embassy has instructed
American citizens to shelter-in-place amid reports of the airport taking
fire.
