This Is Will Surely Happen Again - Okudzeto Ablakwa Predicts A Coup d'état

Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa believes that the military takeover in Guinea should serve as a wake-up call to African leaders that the coup era of the 1960s and 1980s may return if the unwarranted thirst for third-termism, corruption, joblessness, poverty, constitution-manipulation, profligacy of the ruling elite, and naked impunity are not curtailed.

Soldiers appeared on national television in Guinea, claiming to have dissolved President Alpha Condé’s government.

The move by the military has been condemned by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which has called for the respect of the physical integrity of the President of the Republic, Professor Alpha Condé, as well as the immediate and unconditional release of all those arrested.

Also demands, under penalty of sanctions, a return to constitutional order.

But reacting to the happenings in Guinea, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa indicated that “Instead of waiting late in the day to threaten sanctions on failed democracies, regional and sub-regional blocs such as AU, ECOWAS, SADC and EAC should be boldly proactive in calling out their peers on the wrong track and demanding good governance that meets the expectations of the masses, particularly African youth”.

“African leaders can begin by condemning their colleagues for amending their constitutions to allow them to stand for third terms, isolating offending politicians, and refusing to attend their coronation ceremonies, rather than unprincipled support for Côte d’Ivoire, Burundi, Uganda, Guinea, Comoros, Djibouti, Togo, Chad, Congo, and Cameroon in flagrant violation of the African Charter on Human Rights,” he said.

This weekend’s explosion could have been avoided if the AU and ECOWAS had not conveniently hidden behind non-interference in internal politics and shown courage by opposing President Conde’s third term agenda a couple of years ago”.
