Government Allegedly Gives GH¢25 Million From National Money To Start Building The National Cathedral

The Minority in Parliament is demanding answers from Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta for releasing GHC25 million cedis to the National Cathedral Secretariat as additional seed money.

The NDC MPs are questioning the basis for the release since no such allocation was made in the 2022 budget approved by parliament adding the move is a grand deception.

Addressing the media Minority spokesperson on Foreign Affair, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa accused the Akufo-Addo administration of misplaced priorities given the state’s inability to meet many essential financial needs.

“God will not be pleased that first of all you are building a Cathedral based on lies not on truth not on sincerity. You tell us it’s a personal pledge you are not going to use the government’s resources and yet you are using the government’s resources.

“Then in terms of priority, the God Lord that we serve who is very compassionate will not be pleased and happy with the government of Ghana led by Akufo-Addo,” Mr. Ablakwa noted.

The MP said he cannot fathom “that in the face of all these excruciating hardship, hunger,” the government is diverting the nation’s unavailable resources.

Mr. Okudzetu mentioned the finance challenges such as nonpayment of allowances for NABCO beneficiaries, NSS personnel, School feeding program among others.

The North Tongu MP revealed three urgent questions have been filed to summon the Finance Minister over the matter which he alleged is shrouded in shadiness, corruption and deception.

Where Are Your Values – UG Lecturer Tackles Akufo-Addo Over Galamsey Fight Commitment

Published

on

A lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) Dr. Kobby Mensah has expressed his dismay about the President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on his commitment to the fight against galamsey.

The lecturer questioned the values of the president following his comment yesterday at a meeting with the National House of Chiefs and MMDCES on galamsey in the country.

This comes after the President who asked Chiefs to take out partisan politics from the fight against galamsey went ahead to remind his appointees that their determination to fight galamsey will help the NPP ‘break the eight’.

In a tweet sighted by this theGhanaianvoice.com, the lecturer asked,“where are your values” referring to Akufo-Addo.

He explained that everything should not be about the next election but rather focus on making the lives of Ghanaians better.

“So NPP will only fight Galamsay becos will make them win elections. Ei! Where are the values – securing the future of generations unborn? Sustaining the earth resources? Protecting the livelihoods – human and animals etc. None of these important to president but elections,” he said in a tweet.

To Dr Kobby Mensah, the President should have focused on how well the environment will be protected and how the country would benefit immensely from the fight.

We’re Engaged In Community Mining, Not Galamsey – Asamang Tamfoe Residents

We’re Engaged In Community Mining, Not Galamsey – Asamang Tamfoe Residents

Nana Boakye Darkwa (right), Benkumhene of Asamang Tamfoe, addressing journalists on the shooting incident

At a press conference at Asamang Tamfoe on Monday, the Benkumhene of the town, Nana Boakye Darkwa, said the area had been licensed for a community mining programme which the government launched in June this year.

Shooting indiscriminately

On Thursday, September 29, 2022, members of the Okyeman Environmental Taskforce and the Kibi Divisional Police Command raided the town and that led to indiscriminate shootings during which some of the young men sustained gunshot wounds and had to be treated at the hospital.

Clad in red bands

Nana Darkwa, who is also the Chairman of the government’s community mining committee, clad in red band and surrounded by other members of the community, including the youth of the town all of whom were clad in red apparell, said it was unfortunate that the chief of Apapam, Osabarima Okogyeaman Apagya Ofori, should lead the Okyeman Taskforce to direct its members to shoot at innocent young men in the town who were engaged in licensed community mining but not illegal mining.

We will face them squarely

“If they come back to the community, we will face them squarely”, the Benkumhene of Asamang Tamfoe indicated.

Nana Darkwa stressed that if the Apapamhene and the taskforce were actually clamping down on illegal miners, they should have presented themselves to the Benkumhene of the town to announce their presence and intentions, as quoted by Graphic Online.

The Benkumhene pointed out that they failed to do so but rather started shooting indiscriminately leading to many of the youth sustaining gunshot wounds.

He also expressed displeasure with the involvement of the Kyebi Divisional Police Commander, Superintendent Magnus Reindorf Sam, who led the Okyeman Taskforce and called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to immediately remove the commander from the area because he did not do the right thing.

Most of the youth in the town, who were engaged in government’s community mining, said they were for peace that was why they decided not to physically confront the police and the taskforce.

According to the youth, the community mining concept was the initiative of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and so the President should call the Okyeman Taskforce and the Kyebi Divisional Police Commander to order.

Cocoa Pricing: 21% Increment Woefully In Adequate – Ato Forson

Published

on

Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson says the 21 percent increase in the producer price for cocoa which has been pegged at GH¢800 per bag is too small.

The government led by the COCOBOD made adjustments to the prices of cocoa prices after two years without increment.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News in Accra, the lawmaker said, the new prices is not enough.

“That is way too small,” Mr. Forson when asked about the nice price as announced by COCOBOD

Before this increase, Ghana had last increased its farm gate price in 2020; from GH¢515 to GH¢660.

The Minority had previously called for the farm gate price to be increased to GH¢1000 per bag.

“We know in times like this, persons who should benefit most is the one whose currency has depreciated the most. Ghana’s currency has depreciated more than that of the Ivory Coast.”

Despite the Minority’s criticism, the recent increase was in line with recommendations from some observers in the industry.

The Ghana Civil-Society Cocoa Platform, for example, had proposed a 15 percent to 20 percent increment in the farm gate price of cocoa.

The increase in prices follows COCOBOD securing a syndicated loan of $1.13 billion for the 2022/2023 crop season.
