Kennedy Agyapong Launches PHD Campaign; See More Details

Presidential hopeful and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has launched a new motivational programme dubbed: “The Guidance Conference” with call on the youth to imbibe the principles of Patriotism, Honesty and Discipline (PHD).

The programme which was launched at the Western Regional capital of Sekondi-Takoradi over the weekend aims at conscientising Ghanaians on the need to have a positive mindset towards the holistic development of the country.

The maiden conference was on the theme: “The Youth-Our Future Hope” and brought together hundreds of youth in and around the metropolis.

Performing the launch, Mr Agyapong explained that the slogan PHD stood for Patriotism, Honesty and Discipline.

Mr Agyapong explained that PHD were the cardinal principles that separated the developed world from Africa and Ghana in particular, stressing that “Many Ghanaians do things and act in ways that depart from these principles and that remains the main reason why we are still underdeveloped.”

The MP who is also a successful businessman and an entrepreneur noted that, no country had even developed with its natural resources alone, but have been able to harness these resources and through PHD had developed to take care of its citizenry.

Touching on patriotism, he implored the Ghanaians to show love to their country by being patriotic in every sphere of their national lives, adding that “Workers and employees especially have to treat public institutions in which they work as if it is their own.”
He bemoaned the situation where Ghanaians often said negative things to discourage hardworking and committed employees who work wholeheartedly.

This, he said, did not portray patriotism and thus goes a long way to affect the forward march of the country.

On the issue of honesty, he encouraged the people especially the youth, to be truthful in all their engagements.

Mr Agyapong noted that, it was only honesty that would compel people to declare their incomes and pay the appropriate taxes on them and that without it people would continue to short change the country.

He also made it abundantly clear that, indiscipline in the country was one of the major reasons why the country lose a lot of money that could have been used to develop many sectors of the economy.

The Legislator noted that workers in many state organisations reported late to work at most of the time and didn’t care whether or not services were rendered to the public.

He used the occasion to take the youth through his working life and urged them to see successful people who made their monies through hard work as their role models.

Mr Agyapong explained that he worked and toiled tirelessly right after his secondary school days to be able to make it up to where he was today.

He said, he has been able to make it through perseverance, hope and a positive mentality,

“If a businessman wants to be successful, he or she shouldn’t give up on failure,” he said.

Mr Agyapong motivated Ghanaians to take their destiny into their own hands and not depend on the government for all their needs, stressing that “the national resources are being shared by many people and may not go round to everyone.”

2023 Budget: Minority Vows to Resist 2.5% Increment In VAT

The Minority in Parliament has vowed to resist any attempt by the government to revise the rate of Value Added Tax (VAT) upwards in the 2023 budget.

Government has given an indication VAT rate will be increased from the current 17.5% to 20%.

Speaking to the media in parliament, MP for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem Nyarko argued such a move will further exacerbate the current hardship in the country.

The NDC MPs rather want the government to cut down expenditure especially from the presidency vault.

“In fact the information we are picking up doesn’t look good for our dear country. The budget that is due to be read tomorrow promises to be a budget full of taxes. What we are hearing is that this government intends to increase VAT by 2.8 percent. They intend to increase income taxes and they intend to remove a lot of exemptions to Mobile Money (MoMo). So even merchants are going to be subjected to taxes.

“We have known this government to be insensitive but we never knew that their level of insensitivity would be this high. Because in this time of serious hardship in this country with inflation so high none of us expected that they would be increasing taxes to this level,” the Member of the Finance Committee stated.

He continued: “Our (Minority) posture is that we are willing to support the government in these difficult times. Because they need help if we don’t help this economy will crash. However, the government must come clear to show they are going to reduce expenditure drastically.”

Nobody Has The Right To Be A Minister; Ofori-Atta Must Go – ACEP Director

The Executive Director for Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has added his voice to calls for the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to resign.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Probe, Mr Benjamin Boakye stated that being a minister is not a constitutional right therefore if people are calling for his resignation, he should go.

“When you have 85% of the people’s representative saying that they have lost confidence in you, they do not want you, I do not think that anybody has the right to be a minister – there is no constitutional right to be a minister for which anybody can defend,” he said.
This comes after the Finance Minister appeared before the 8-member Adhoc Committee of Parliament hearing a motion of censure against him by the Minority to defend himself.

According to Mr Boakye, there is no need for Mr Ofori-Atta to defend himself.

“This is an unnecessary addition to what we need to do at this point in terms of what we need to do to recover,” he said.

“It is the constitutional process of people voting and the will of the people that say that he has to go at this point. We are told that 85% of his people in his own camp says he should go and the entire Minority, put that together, it is an overwhelming number,” he added.
