Scores of protestors believed to be supporters of the NDC protesting at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission have been dispersed by the security services with hot water and tear gas.
After the declaration of the 2020 elections by the chairperson of the electoral commission, Madam Jean Mensah, the opposition National Democratic Congress has since refuse to accept the verdict citing irregularities and padding of figures in favour of the incumbent President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo.
According to Ghone TV’s correspondent, Godwin Asiniba, stationed at the headquarters of the electoral commission at Ridge where the protest is ongoing, party supporters are wielding placards with different inscriptions and in red and black apparels protesting the results of the just ended elections.
The protestors started burning tyres in the middle of the roads leading to the EC’s headquarters and the Police had to use their water cannons to quench the flames. A confrontation erupted between some protestors and the security which lead to the firing of tear gas to disperse the protestors.
Speaking on the development on Ghone TV, Mr. Ade Coker, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC indicated that they were there to peacefully protest the results and demand the resignation of the chairperson of the commission.

May 23, 2022Cedi Depreciation Pushes Ghana’s Debt To Over GH¢390 Bn In April; 78% Of GDP
Recent data released by the Bank of Ghana puts Ghana’s total public debt stock as of March 2022, at US$ 55.1 billion or GH¢391.9 billion.
In Dollar terms, the debt dropped by over $3 billion in the first 3 months of the year, from $58.4 billion in January to $55.1 billion in March.
In Cedi terms, however, the total debt stock within the first 3 months of this year increased by about GH¢ 40 billion, from GH¢351.7 billion in January 2022, to GH¢391.9 in March 2022.
The March 2022 debt figure brings Ghana’s debt to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio to 78%, using a projected GDP for 2022 of about GH¢502 billion.
Year-on-year growth
A look at the data from the Central bank shows that year-on-year, from March 2021 to March 2022, the debt stock rose by about 30% from GH¢304.6 billion to GH¢391.9 billion.
Domestic debt
A further breakdown of the debt numbers shows that the component of debt secured locally rose by GH¢8 billion from GH¢ 181.9 billion in January to GH¢ 189.9 billion in March, which represents about 38% of the projected GDP for 2022.
External debt
The external component of the debt, increased significantly by about GH¢ 32 billion in the first 3 months of 2022, from GH¢169.8 billion in January to GH¢201.9 billion in March.
Impact of Cedi depreciation
The overall surge in the debt figure in Cedi terms came largely from the over 15% depreciation of the cedi against the dollar from January to March 2022.
Data from the Central Bank showed that the US Dollar sold at GH¢6.02 at the end of January 2022 and at GH¢7.11 at the end of March 2022.

May 23, 2022Chairman Wontumi Is 100% Competent Than NDC Leaders – Atubiga
The Founder of the National Liberation Congress, Stephen Atubiga says, the incumbent regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as, Chairman Wontumi must be retained by delegates of the party, in the upcoming internal elections of the aforementioned.
In an up-close with Kweku Dawuro on the ‘Movement In The Morning Political Show’ on Monday, the defected member of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), said, the competency and capabilities of Mr. Antwi-Boasiako outweigh the aforementioned of the National Chairman, of the largest opposition party, NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.
“Chairman Wontumi is 100% better, than the National Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo. “He’s capable of even managing the entire election machinery of the NDC, coupled with even educating the national chairman and other executives of the NDC, on what strategies to adopt, to win an election.” He asserts.
He said, Managing a political party, goes beyond intellectuality. “Degree doesn’t guarantee victory in an election. He added.
Highlighting factors he believes are the reason, Chairman Wontumi stands out among his contenders, Mr. Atubiga said, Chairman Wontumi’s relations with the indigenes of the Ashanti region, regardless of one’s political affiliation, tribe or race.
“There are some executives of the NDC who have benefited from the benevolence of Chairman Wontumi. He’s ready to support you despite your political differences.”
He further went on to say, even in the worse state of the incumbent Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, he ensured a tremendous victory for the party, whiles in opposition.
Although I’m aligned with the ideology of the NDC, a party I once belonged to, an ideology he claims the National Liberation Congress has adopted, unarguably, Wontumi has been able to outsmart all other political parties in the Ashanti region”. He noted.
Buttressing his assertions, Mr. Atubiga stressed, “In the history of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, nobody has been able to garner enough votes than Chairman Wontumi, since more 1992, so why change the winning team”? He quizzed.
“He’s a treasure the party must do all within its will, not to lose. In a nutshell, he has what it takes to rule, even at the national level. He’s the best material for the National more Chairman. He added.
Mr. Atubiga warned delegates going to the polls from May 27- 29, to ensure they cast their ballot in favor of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, or they will regret any otherwise decision.
Bernard Antwi- Boasiako is expected to contest with four other candidates, to retain his position, as the Ashanti regional chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party.
