Sad News Hits Ghana As Students Bus Involved In A Terrible Accident; Videos, Photos Drop -WATCH

A mini bus with registration number AC-1219-18 was involved in a road accident on Wednesday afternoon, leaving several students injured leaving one(1) in a critical condition.

According to the mini bus driver name withheld, the bus, which had over 50 students on board, veered off the road and landed in a gutter after the break failed, this happened at a junction connecting to Nana Gyamfi’s stadium, between Ahweneɛ Junction and Anglican Church in Bekwai Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region.

The injured passengers were admitted at Bekwai Government Hospital but later discharge at 5PM .

Although hospital personnel declined to speak on record, they confirmed that 10 of the victims sustained various degrees of injuries, with others suffering fractures of the arm and leg.

News gathering here this morning indicates that, the mate who was in a critical conditions after the Victory International School bus veered off road has been confirmed dead.

UTAG, TEWU and Others Issue Strong Statement On The Indefinite Strike -Wild Details Drop

All four labour unions in Ghana’s public tertiary education space have resolved to embark on an indefinite strike effective Thursday, October 13, 2022.

The unions made up of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU), Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Ghana Association of University Administration (GAUA) have given the government up to a week to resolve their concerns.

“Following the Press Conference by UTAG, GAUA, SSA-UoG, and TEWU-GH with FUSSAG in attendance on Wednesday, 28″ September 2022 at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, the National Leadership of the four Labour Unions have had a series of engagements between some stakeholders of tertiary education in Ghana, including Vice Chancellors Ghana
(VCG).

“Upon further deliberations among the National Leaders, we write to communicate that the intended strike action of all labour unions in the public universities in Ghana takes effect from Thursday, 13 October 2022. This gives the employer and all stakeholders of tertiary education in Ghana one crucial week to reverse the directive that seeks to negatively compromise the Conditions of Service of University Workers.

In the statement signed by the leadership of the various unions, members were entreated to stay calm and cooperate with leadership as we navigate this trying moment.

According to the unions, displeased with what they refer to as a” blatant unilateral variation of service in the face of hostile economic conditions.”

Free SHS Has Been Beneficial To Ghana – Adutwum

The Minister of Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum has dismissed claims that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme has reduced the quality of education at the second cycle level in Ghana.

He said the programme has rather improved on the quality of education across the country the 75th anniversary of Dormaa Senior High School, Adutwum expressed worry over the low number of students studying science and mathematics in the institution.

The Dormaa SHS in the Dormaa Central municipality of the Bono Region was established on 24 February 1947 by SK Yeboah and JM Oppong under the name Dormaa State College with just a student.

It currently boasts of 4,473 students with a staff strength of 166 graduate teachers and 47 non-teaching officials.

The headmaster of Dormaa SHS, Nicholas Mensah commended the government for the Free SHS and STEM programmes because that will go a long way to address youth unemployment.

Payment of Allowances to Teachers in Deprived Communities; Important Update Drops

In 2009 the Ghana Education Service have signed against the provision of the 2009 Collective Agreement between the Ghana Education Service and the Teacher Unions in the Education Service which enjoins GES in section 18.3 to pay allowances based on monthly gross salary to teachers posted to areas designated as deprived.

In August 2020, the Agreement was renewed and the government promised to pay allowances to teachers who accepted postings to deprived communities in Ghana. Two years today the government has not paid such allowances agreed upon to this class of teachers which have made schools in deprived communities to lack teachers as most of the teachers in such areas have left such communities.The three teacher unions namely, GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT are therefore reminding the government on this agreement to play it’s cards very well in honoring it’s part of the Agreement and this should be done before 31st December, 2022.

The teacher unions have expressed sentiments of anxiety and disappointment in the government for trying to sabotage education in the deprived communities. They added that teachers in towns must not be treated same way as teachers in the deprived communities and this is because there are so many benefits that those in towns enjoy which are not available to those in the deprived places.

As the government desired quality education for all, this should be done evenly so that every ghanaian will have the chance to access quality education. This can only be achieved when teachers are motivated to compete with the other public sector workers in living standard and not seen as people without future. The government is on this note reminded once more to motivate teachers very well since that class controls the development and growth of every country.

If a country will develop it is it’s education system that trains quality leaders and work force and this is achieved through quality teaching from the teachers. Nothing is possible if the foundamentals are week which means free senior high will not yield it’s desired results if the foundations from the basic schools are very weak.
