Rev. Dr. Isaac Owusu, Central Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, has warned the government and educational administrators that teachers will no longer tolerate injustice.
“The sitting allowances of some people in this country can pay the retirement benefits of a number of teachers,” he pointed out, “but teachers retire with a pass credit of 5,000 from SSNIT after serving for 24 years.”
“A Ghanaian teacher will serve his country wholeheartedly, in schools without furniture and dormitories, but later retire as a purper,” he emphasized.
Rev. Dr. Owusu delivered the statement in Ajumako at the 6th Quadrennial District Conference of GNAT, Ajumako chapter, on the theme, “GNAT at 90, Surviving as a Reliable and Vibrant Teacher Union in the Twenty-First Century.”
According to him, the Central Region is the region with the highest number of complaints, ranging from upgrades to promotions to allowances, and so on.
According to him, the service has not received any textbooks since the change of curriculum in 2019, and it is not surprising that there were no exams for students in 2019, and 2021.
He stated that the era of fear and intimidation is over, and that they must speak up when they are unhappy and work hard in the next ten years for the sake of their members, adding that they must fight or die trying.
Mrs. Sabina Otoo, the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District Director of Education, hinted that the Directorate recorded four s*xual harassment cases involving teachers in mid-year last year, of which some unfavorable decisions had to be made.
As a result, she urged the Union to prioritize the education of their members and their working conditions.
She reminded teachers that the government will never be able to pay them as much as they deserve, so they should consider doing some income-generating activities to supplement their income, but they should not let those activities interfere with their work as teachers or prevent them from using their Learners.
This was the occasion for the election of new officers who will serve for the next two years.
